One of the original and still one of the best Japanese restaurants on the north shore.
The first time I ever sampled Japanese food was at Kyushu (at the old location near woolies carpark) back in 1993.
It was bliss back then and it still is today.
And best of all they still offer many of the same items on their menu that they did when I was growing up, like their tempura dumplings and beef tataki, which are to die for.
It is a little more pricey than some of the places which have opened in more recent years but it offers something rather different, a little more specialised, a little more regional.
It is not a place I'd recommend for a "quick lunch" however. Go with friends, order from the range of Sakis they offer, relax and share a couple of different items from the menu.
You won't be disappointed. -

My Apt was next door and the place is always packed, so it's very loud. I tried the CA roll which was below average. Very fake crab and old avocados; it was 20 min before closing so they had likely been out for a while, so I can't complain. Better than average wasabi.
I also had the teriyaki chicken roll. Beautiful presentation and cooked wonderfully, with crispy skin and great flavor. This almost moved it to 4 stars but the noise level is ridiculous I can plug my ears and it's still unbearable.
Prices are affordable for the area and for a sit down restaurant
No soy sauce on the table is odd for me. -

You know how people are always claiming to be the Original at something, because the original is apparently the best? Yeah, so, I didn't really know what that meant before boring old Grosvener Street got the living crap gentrified out of it. It rules now, no denying, but you know who was there all along? Kyushu.
Like a quiet, dignified, classy little Japanese man sitting in the corner of a suburban pub, Kyushu has maintained its class and its quality for years now, and it has never, ever slipped. Because, being Japanese, the consquence is hari kari, and nobody wants that.
Always busy - although convivial is a better word because rather than feel squashed in you feel a part of something friendly and delicious - the mainstays I can direct you in the direction of are the pork-wrapped shallots, which will change your life - I know I say that in pretty much every review but this time they really will - and the Deluxe Sashimi Selection which comes served in an ice-filled bowl big enough to train dolphins in. I know because I tried, although better not to ask where I got the dolphins. (HINT: it was Seaworld. Crap security. Probably pretty good now though. I know, I've ruined it for all the other children out there who ever dreamed of stealing a dolphin. What can I say, first come first steal.) -

Ah Neutral Bay..... where you go for Japanese food (mainly because it seems like half the restaurants are Japanese). This place is probably the busiest Japanese joint in the area. And it got to this place for good reason. The sushi (especially sashimi platter) is fresh, the service is prompt, and everything is great.
They do have some nice entrees that I have not seen elsewhere, but sadly the names escape me.
My favourite item here is the hot pot. It is a double serve, so be prepared to either die from over eating or make sure your partner is willing to split the dish with you.
One issue I have is how busy it is. I cannot figure out why this place draws such crowds, as there are so many good Japanese places out here. But if I want some hot pot, then I will show up and hope there is a few spots free (either a table or the sushi bar). -

This is one of the stock standard best Japanese restaurants in town - we regularly drive down from North Ryde for lunch as a group during the week.
This place has been here for ever, and it is still true to it's origins.
I like the fact you get the traditional Japanese greeting when you walk in, and the bento box lunch combos are absolutely cracking value.
Sashimi served on a massive bowl of ice was a surprise, but a good one - the quality of fish is much better than some others who tend to serve less than sashimi-quality tuna and salmon.
As Benjamin pointed out, the rest of the street is going all up-market and trendy - here's hoping these guys don't feel the urge!! Don't fix it cos it ain't broke!
